Building on my experience looking at 17th Century Dutch Still Life, I find my work taking on a contemporary complexity with the addition of background photographs from my journeys.

This series of large format digital photographs containing foods and natural objects combined with common consumer electronic objects references the legacy of 17th Century Dutch and Flemish still lifes. Set in traditional chiaroscuro lighting (or so they seem) my choice of objects are influenced by day to day exposure to household items that signify various time periods – inherited antiques, obsolete electronic devices, under-used studio equipment.

My work investigates the juxtaposition of traditional composition, structure and lighting with contemporary objects and technology. Not always sure where my work will take me, frequently, I discover a direction other than that which I originally intended. The atmospheric backgrounds have become an important addition to my recent compositions.
